6 Major things that make your home look cheap
When it comes to decorating your home, it’s not about how much you spend—it’s all about what you choose and how you put everything together.
You can fill your space with budget-friendly items and still achieve a high-end, stylish look. But some things instantly cheapen the feel of your home, no matter the price tag.
Over time, I’ve learned to avoid certain items that don’t add value to the space. Here are a few things that make your home look cheap and what to do instead.
Things that make your home look cheap
1. Fake Plants
I used to think fake plants were an easy way to bring some greenery into my home, but let’s be real—most of them just don’t look good. The colour is often too bright or unnatural, and the texture is nowhere near as rich as the real thing. Some even have an odd plastic sheen that screams ‘cheap.’
Instead of filling your home with artificial greenery, opt for real plants that are easy to maintain, like snake plants, pothos, or even dried flowers for a low-maintenance but stylish alternative. A little greenery makes a big difference, and real plants give that fresh, organic feel that fake ones just can’t match.

2. Plastic Decor and Storage Containers
Plastic decor, plastic organisers, plastic storage bins—no more of that! I know it’s tempting to buy all those ‘smart’ organising tools, but if you overdo it, your home ends up looking like a storage warehouse rather than a cosy, stylish space.
Not all budget decor looks cheap, but certain materials do. Instead of plastic, go for wood, glass, or woven materials like rattan. Swap out plastic storage containers for glass jars or ceramic canisters in the kitchen. Use woven baskets instead of plastic bins for organising. These small changes instantly elevate your space and make everything feel more considered and cohesive.

3. Buying a Whole Furniture Set from a Showroom
It might seem like the easiest way to furnish a room—just buy the whole matching set from a showroom—but this is one of the quickest ways to make your home look staged and lifeless. It ends up feeling like a furniture store display rather than a home with personality and warmth.
Instead, mix and match different pieces that complement each other rather than going for identical furniture sets. Try pairing a vintage wooden dining table with modern chairs or layering different styles of seating in your living room. This approach creates a more curated, natural feel rather than a one-note, mass-produced look.

4. The Wrong Rug (or No Rug at All)
A rug can completely transform a space, but the wrong one can throw everything off. A bad rug is one that has a cheap texture, an outdated pattern, or colours that clash with the rest of your decor.
And size matters too! A rug that’s too small makes the room feel disconnected, while one that’s too large can overwhelm the space.
You don’t need to spend a fortune on a quality rug—there are plenty of affordable options that look high-end. Focus on getting the right texture and scale for your space. A rug helps define areas in an open-plan layout and adds warmth and depth to a room. Take the time to find one that fits well.

5. Cliché Word Art
If you’re not really into art, I get it—not everyone is. But one thing that makes a home look cheap is those generic word art prints with phrases like ‘Live, Laugh, Love’ or ‘Home Sweet Home.’ They lack personality and don’t add much value to your space.
Instead, go for something more abstract that ties into the colours and mood of your home. If you’re feeling creative, try making your own art! I’ve done this myself—sometimes, I just play around with colours until I find something that works, and it’s so much more meaningful than store-bought prints. If DIY isn’t your thing, framed prints from independent artists are great alternatives. The key is to choose art that feels personal and unique to you.

6. Curtains with Bad Drape
I won’t even get into the right height and width—that depends on each space. But aside from proper placement, I think fabric choice makes the biggest difference! Curtains can make or break a space, and choosing the wrong fabric can instantly make a room look cheap.
Fabrics that don’t drape well, look stiff, or hang awkwardly give off an unpolished feel. You don’t need to spend a lot on custom curtains—there are plenty of affordable options that look high-end if you choose the right material.
Personally, I buy my curtains from IKEA, and they work just fine! The key is to focus on the fabric’s texture and how it falls. Soft, flowing curtains give a relaxed, luxurious feel. Avoid overly shiny synthetic fabrics, and instead, go for linen, cotton, or blends with a natural drape.

7. Mass-Produced Home Decor
If you’re on a budget, it’s easy to fill your home with mass-produced decorative items from chain stores. But too many store-bought decorations can make your space feel generic and impersonal.
Instead of buying decor just for the sake of decoration, look around your home and use what you already have. Books, ceramics, woven baskets, or even unique plates can be displayed in a way that feels intentional. If you do want to buy something new, consider investing in one or two high-quality pieces rather than a bunch of cheap trinkets.
Vintage shops and second-hand stores are also great places to find unique, affordable decor with character.
Making your home look stylish doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune. It’s all about selecting the right materials, textures, and pieces that work together. By avoiding things like fake plants, plastic decor, showroom furniture sets, bad rugs, word art, cheap curtains, and mass-produced decorations, you can create a space that feels curated and inviting. The key is to focus on quality over quantity, natural textures, and personal touches—because a well-styled home isn’t about how much you spend, but how you bring everything together!
