One of my favourite things about kitchen design is sourcing from local Australian makers whenever possible. We have so many talented artisans and small businesses creating beautiful tapware, lighting, and furniture. Supporting local doesn’t just help the community; it also gives your kitchen a unique, personal touch.

Working with local makers often means you can customise colours and materials to suit your vision. Plus, you can have open conversations with them about how their pieces are made, ensuring they align with your sustainability goals. These collaborations result in pieces that feel special and meaningful.

And don’t forget, your kitchen is for you—not for anyone else. It should feel comfortable and aligned with your style, even if it’s not what’s trending.

My Evergreen Project

If you don’t know me, I’m Jacqueline from The Glade Design, and I’d love to share a little case study from one of my projects—a kitchen renovation we called Evergreen. While it might look like the vibrant colours and warm finishes are the stars of the show, this project was really all about functionality.

The clients had clear priorities, and one of them—who works in the hospitality industry—came to me with a list of must-haves. Storage was a top priority. They needed plenty of room for the appliances they use daily and requested an island bench that could be as large as possible to support their love of baking and recipe testing.

Since the layout was already fixed due to the position of the sink and electrical appliances, I decided to focus on the details: the colour scheme and custom joinery.

Making Every Inch Count

With this kitchen being on the smaller side, I had to carefully plan every cabinet and drawer to make the most of the space. I started by noting down exactly what the clients needed to store. From there, I designed storage that was tailored to their items, ensuring nothing was wasted.

On the cooking side of the kitchen, I made a small but impactful change—swapping out the old sink for a single-bowl design and moving the dishwasher closer to it. This tweak freed up enough space to add spice drawers on both sides of the cooktop. Such a simple adjustment, but it made a huge difference in functionality!

A Fresh and Playful Look

The original kitchen had a cold, monochromatic vibe, which didn’t reflect the warmth of the home. To bring in some personality, I introduced a flower-inspired colour scheme with burnt orange and soft pinks, tying it back to the tones in the clients’ bedroom.

For the benchtop, we chose a low-maintenance timber finish. It not only adds warmth but also complements the playful colours without feeling overwhelming. The result is a space that feels balanced—somewhere between ‘zen minimalist’ and ‘maximalist joy.’

Same Size, Better Functionality

Even though the kitchen is the same size as before, the thoughtful design has completely transformed how the clients use the space. The new island bench is perfect for their baking sessions, the tailored storage keeps everything organised, and the playful colours make it a space they love spending time in.

This project was a reminder that even small kitchens can have a big impact with the right design choices.
